Payroll Specialist (UK)

Run a UK payroll week at a 190-person company: clear a checking run, stop a bank-detail change that is really a fraud, re-test pay against the minimum wage after salary sacrifice, get a pay date right for staff on Universal Credit, and put a pay error right with the person it hurt.

What you'll build

Real portfolio pieces built during the course, not a certificate for its own sake. Each one is work you can show.

  • Checking-run exception logSeptember's exception pack worked to a decision per item: what the report showed, what caused it, what was done before sign-off, and who acts. Finds the leaver nobody reported, corrects a starter's code, resolves a negative net pay line, evidences a variance to the pound, and holds two bank changes for verification.
  • Bank-change verification recordEvery bank-detail change since the last run: what it rested on, how it was verified independently of the requester, what was found, and what is paid where on payday. Stops a spoofed-email change and a probable self-service account takeover, and proposes the controls a two-person team can actually run.
  • Minimum wage re-testThe lowest-paid staff re-tested against the minimum wage for September after salary sacrifice and deductions, with the working shown: pay, what comes off and whether it counts, hours, the rate owed, the result, and what changes in the file before release.
  • Pay correction planPayday's three errors, each set out so the Payroll Lead can pick it up on Monday: what went wrong, what is owed in which direction, how it is put right, what the person was told and agreed, and what the next return needs.

Description

Every CertClue course follows the same seven-part shape: fundamentals, the role translated out of job-posting language, a real working day, the job's recurring rhythms, a multi-day simulation, the portfolio you build along the way, and a handoff into your next move. Here is what that looks like for payroll specialist.

Who this course is for

Anyone aiming to become a payroll specialist, including career changers with no background in it yet. This is the entry rung of a realistic ladder:

entry
Payroll Administrator / Payroll Specialist

Runs the monthly payroll for a single employer: collects and checks the changes, clears the exception reports, sends the Bacs file on time, files the RTI returns, and answers employees' questions about their pay. Nothing is legally required to do the job in the UK; employers usually look for accuracy, some payroll software experience, or study towards a payroll certificate.
