Does studying with other people actually help you pass?
Study groups have a reputation problem. Half the people who suggest one are imagining a productive evening of working through hard material together, and the other half are remembering an evening that turned into two hours of talking. Both are real. The question worth asking is whether the research says anything useful about which one you get.
What the evidence says
The strongest recent piece is a 2025 meta-analysis in PLOS ONE that pooled 81 randomised controlled trials covering 6,752 people in medical education. It compared peer-assisted learning, where students teach and work through material with each other, against conventional teaching. On theoretical knowledge, peer-assisted learning came out ahead with a standardised mean difference of 0.77, which is a substantial gap rather than a rounding error.
That same paper is careful about where the benefit stopped. It reports no significant advantage for peer-assisted learning in specialised practical areas such as ultrasound and surgical skills. Working with a peer helped people learn things they had to understand and recall. It did not reliably help them acquire a difficult manual skill.
And where it gets less flattering
A larger review in Review of Educational Research looked at 48 studies of collaborative learning supported by technology, covering 5,294 participants, and found a medium overall benefit of 0.516. Then it broke the result down by who was learning. Secondary school students showed the largest effect at 0.662. Adults showed the smallest of any group, at 0.375. The authors also note that they did not use study quality as a criterion for including a study, which is a reason to treat the headline number as indicative rather than precise.
So the honest summary is not that studying together is a shortcut. It is that collaboration has a real, replicated benefit, that it is measured mostly on students rather than on working adults revising for a professional exam, and that the group where it was measured smallest is the one most people reading this belong to.
Why a group might still be the thing that works for you
The mechanisms that make peer learning work are ones you can point at directly. Explaining a concept to somebody else is retrieval practice wearing a different hat: you have to produce the answer rather than recognise it. A session in the calendar every Tuesday spreads your study across weeks instead of collapsing it into the fortnight before the exam. And the least glamorous one, which no effect size captures well, is that a person expecting you at eight makes you turn up on an evening you would have skipped.

- A standing session spaces your practice out, which is the second best evidenced one.
- Somebody noticing you are behind is a correction that arrives weeks before your exam score does.
- Other people surface the gaps you did not know to look for, because they got a question wrong that you never met.
The honest read
The evidence supports the direction rather than a promise. Nobody has run a randomised trial on people studying for CompTIA or AWS exams in the evenings after work, and the closest research suggests adults get less out of collaboration than teenagers do. What a group reliably gives you is a schedule you are accountable to and a regular reason to say things out loud. If you use it to talk through answers, it earns its place. If you use it to read the same notes in the same room, you have just made re-reading a social activity.
